To some extent, it’s probably perfectly normal to want some approval from others. Young children understandably want approval from their parents as they grow and continue to reach new physical and cognitive growth milestones; children are typically also encouraged in school to seek the approval of their teachers.
Later in life, when things can get pathological – meaning,
unhealthy and leading to distress or stress – is in voluntary social
relationships where one feels they need the approval of another person or
persons in order to feel good enough, respected and cared for. Sometimes, in
toxic relationships, a person comes to feel that they will only get these
things based on meeting certain conditions for approval. Soon, I will share a
new self-help video on this topic that I think people who struggle with this issue
will find helpful.
Just remember, every single day we have the choice to say,
“I will take responsibility for my part and do what I need to do to improve myself
my overall life.”
