Comments on a recent video I recorded on my YouTube channel, Dr. Seth: Psychologist, made me think more about the topic of people who resist it when others try to confront them about something they're upset about.
I reflected on how deflection is different than gaslighting, and I do want to point out that gaslighting is often misused as it has become such a common word used in the culture.
Gaslighting refers to an attempt to deny someone else's reality and to render someone else's perspective as illegitimate or even "crazy," while deflection is a defense mechanism one uses to try to avoid really uncomfortable feelings that are triggered when someone confront them about an issue.
