Narcissists are highly focused on maintaining an image they perceive as flawless. When something happens to tarnish that image, the narcissist may end up shutting someone out -- or even a whole group if the narcissist believes that those people may judge them or see them as flawed in any way.
Above all, the narcissist typically wants to be known as an elevated, special member of any group they're a part of, whether it's a family, a social group, or a group of friends or peers.
